Hogueras de San Juan (Bonfires of St John) is one of Calpe’s most atmospheric summer celebrations, held every year on the night of 23 June to mark the summer solstice and the shortest night of the year. The festival has been celebrated in Calpe since 1991 and combines ancient fire and water rituals with music, fireworks and beach festivities.
The main celebration takes place on Arenal-Bol beach, where locals and visitors gather for a communal dinner, live music and the ceremonial burning of a large bonfire at midnight. A traditional ritual is to enter the sea at midnight or jump over embers for good luck and purification.
A second, more traditional neighbourhood bonfire is also lit in the La Cometa area, where residents build a pyre from old furniture and objects to symbolically burn the past and welcome summer
