What is the Ruta Roja?
The Ruta Roja marks the more challenging part of the hike to the top of the Peñón de Ifach, the iconic limestone rock that rises 332 meters above the Mediterranean Sea. After the initial, more accessible section of the path (the green route up to the tunnel), the trail becomes steeper and more technical. This is where the Ruta Roja begins – with rocky paths, narrow ledges, and even sections with ropes and chains for extra support.
Who is this route for?
This route is best suited for experienced hikers with a good fitness level. The terrain can be tricky and slippery, especially in damp conditions. Solid hiking shoes with grip are essential, along with plenty of water and sun protection. It’s not recommended for small children or those with a fear of heights.
Why it’s worth it
Once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views over the Costa Blanca coastline, the Alicante countryside, and on clear days – even Ibiza. The summit is also a great spot for birdwatching, as the Peñón is a protected natural park home to unique flora and fauna.
